It’s been a year since I started yoga and it’s great to look back and see just how far I’ve come.  My gymnastics background definitely gave me a head start when it came to starting yoga but there were, and still are, some poses which I find challenging.  Here are a few asanas which I have recently cracked and a look back at my progress from when I took part in my first Instagram yoga challenge back in November 2014:

Bow Pose

Flipping my grip in bow pose has proved to be a real challenge.  I’ve been able to flip my grip in similar asanas such as Tiger pose and Dancers pose for a while now and had worked up to being able to flip one side at a time in Bow pose, however a full flipped gripped bow has evaded me for ages with my toes always slipping out of my fingers before I made it.  I persisted and one day it happened :) It is still definitely a work in progress but now I am at least able to make it into the pose I can work on increasing the stretch further.

Kapotasana

This was another pose I didn’t seem to make any progress in and really struggled with which lead to me leaving it out of my practice and only attempting if it came up in a yoga challenge.  I decided I really wanted to try and get this asana so started making sure to include it in my daily practice, usually at the end when I was most warmed up and bendy, and slowly I was able to get my fingers further up my feet.  I still struggle with this one and it is definitely a pose that requires a thorough warm up before I can achieve it and I will continue to practice in the hopes one day I will reach my heels, if not further ;)

Upside Down Lotus

I never liked Lotus pose, it hurt my ankles and wasn’t very gymnastic for my liking.  My first progress came when I tried crossing my legs the other way and what I thought was my ‘bad’ side turned out to be easier for me.  Usually lotus involves yanking my legs into position so never did I think I would be able to get into it whilst upside down with my arms/hands otherwise occupied.  One day I just decided to see how close I could get in a headstand and my feet wiggled into position :) I can’t believe I thought I just couldn’t do it and now love standing on my head and whipping my legs into lotus.  The next step, forearm lotus and handstand lotus.

This all goes to show practice, practice, practice, makes perfect and to share a favourite quote of mine:
“The more you practice, the luckier you get”

Quintessentially British

I’ve had this shoot idea for a while now, taking yoga pictures with ‘Quintessentially British’ items (think red phone box, post box etc), so I’ve been on the lookout for a red outfit to go with it.  When I saw this matching red outfit at Legacy Sportswear I knew it would be perfect and I am really pleased they also liked my idea so all I had to do now was wait for it to arrive and find some red ‘props’ for the shoot.

When my new Legacy Sportswear outfit arrived it was an absolutely perfect pillar box red (you never can tell when looking online but the colour couldn’t have been better).   I love the material this set is made from, it is lovely and thick and has a matte (rather than shiny) finish.  It felt great and looked great (according to my photographer!).  To go with my red outfit I’d also found the perfect matching shoes the previous day in a charity shop - sometimes everything just falls into place :)
So that was the first part of the picture sorted, now the hard part, finding a red phone box and post box that were still actually red.  We headed off to a previous location my photographer had shot at a few years ago but when we arrived the phone box was more green with mould than red :(.  We decided it wasn’t worth trying anything there so headed off to our next potential place.  On the way between the two I saw a bit of red out the corner of my eye so shouted stop and we detoured down this side street where we found a pristine red phone box in a beautiful village setting :) :) :)
With the phone box done we next needed a post box.  Another drive around but we couldn’t find a suitable one so headed home where we passed the local post office – thatched, whitewashed cottage with a traditional red post box outside = perfect

Because sometimes an insta square just doesn't capture the whole scene
Thank you Legacy Sportswear for my stunning new outfit and the best bit is I have a discount code to share which gets you 10% some new gear for yourself – use CA10 at checkout :)
